The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will. 哪怕没有这些傻逼我依然给满分，因为这是华语恐怖电影，中国的鬼片真的看一部少一部了
就是感觉去西双版纳不用隔离真的不错TAT 海清老师考虑去演一下恐怖片吧。
恐怖片不恐怖那就太搞笑了。符合且高于预期，没有讨论价值和争论空间的作品只能说太过平庸。况且，能让一群张扬个性特立独行的小唯物们喊出社会主义24字大明咒，这第四堵墙打得好，而且打得很有必要
影片直面当下最迫切的问题，立意很好，但影像的呈现始终略弱。很多处的配乐都显得虚张声势。如果能把尾声里Jodie的长独白处理得掷地有声，也许会好一些。
整体观感不错，不过电影还是美化了，可怕的是现实

本片與《絕命派對》相比，最大的進步在於，完全脫離了西方恐怖片的概念，更多的來自於台灣神秘傳統（一個混雜了怪奇軼事，歷史，想象，空間時間交錯的世界）。除了取材於台灣神秘的特殊文化所虛構的大黑佛母外，編導亦把各種密宗，印度，東南亞的符號圖像和引述，起乩，中邪的奇怪手勢放進台灣的深山邪教中，一方面地豐富了恐怖內容，另一方面則突出製作上的考究以及反復強調對傳統文化應保有敬畏之心的主題。除了以奇怪的祭品，陰森的聲響以及黑暗中的光線等視覺描繪突出了大黑佛母的可怕之處，更令人恐懼的是，是當恐怖真相逐漸揭露之時，逐漸有一種心理上的不安出現，面對大黑佛母的無計可施，無疑更能強化了這種焦慮不安氛圍。
